Brown & Root was primarily a road building company until they got the job to build the Mansfield Dam a short distance from Austin TX. The process was facilitated by their friend in Washington, Lyndon Johnson. It put them in the big leagues and started them on the path to bigger and more financially rewarding projects through their association with many powerful denizens if DC... on through their merger with Halliburton and Dick Cheney into major work in Vietnam and Iraq.
