Chauncey Holt

mob accountant and more...
Chauncey Holt

Chauncey Holt was a man of multiple talents. Early in life he spent time on the flying trapeze. He was a mathematical wizard. He distinguished himself by producing near perfect forged documents. Beyond this, within the world of organized crime he was trusted at the highest levels by the likes of Meyer Lansky for his honesty and integrity.

It was Holt, who, in the early days of blossoming Las Vegas reviewed the books of the new casino and found Bugsy Siegel was skimming money from the mob's investment. It was this discovery that led to Siegel's untimely demise.

Holt was one of denizens of the underworld who worked with organized crime but also performed off-the-books services for the CIA. He was in New Orleans watching over Lee Oswald when he was passing out Fair Play for Cuba literature – along with CIA spooks Bud Belcher and Leroy Young.

His account of November 22, 1963 aligns with that of James Files as he was also working with Charles Nicoletti and Johnny Roselli. Days before he was out west and on November 20, he was at a place near Tucson named Grace Ranch which was owned by mob boss Peter Licavoli. He left there with Nicoletti and mob underboss, Leo Moceri with a load of weapons and forged Ids. He took them to the Cabana Hotel near Dealey Plaza early morning of the 22nd, then made a run to Fort Worth to drop of the forged identification material – possibly the badges, etc. for the “unofficial” Secret Service agents who kept people from approaching the fence at the grassy knoll. He then took the weapons in a pick up truck over to Dealey Plaza about mid morning and was likely one of the people observed by Julia Mercer.

With his transportation jobs done for the time being, he, along with Charles Harrelson and Richard Montoya headed to their position in the railroad yard. Harrelson was the father of actor, Woody Harrelson, and at the time was wanted for the murder of Federal Judge John H Wood Jr. Montoya was known on other occasions as Charles Rogers. They had some radio equipment, a police scanner and some sort of television equipment to monitor the events of the day and pass the word along should anything go wrong.

After the President was shot, the police combed the area and found these men – later known as the three tramps and took them into custody. They were recorded under false names and eventually released as the police said it didn't look like they were involved.

Three Tramps

Some said two of the “tramps” were Howard Hunt and Frank Sturgis. Comedian Dick Gregory made a big deal about this at the time, but the pictures did not look like Hunt and Sturgis. Later a facial recognition expert confirmed these were the three men, Holt, Harrelson and Montoya, in the tramps photo with Holt being the last of the three.

Unlike many with his level of knowledge Holt was allowed to live out his days and he died of cancer at the age of 75.
