In 1948 CIA leadership believed it was necessary for the American people to have the proper information to so they would see things the right way. (the CIAs way) So the began by bringing in Philip Graham from the Washington Post to bring in others in the journalism field.
In 1951 Allan Dulles recruited Cord Meyer who would become the primary operative of the program. Some of the best known and respected journalists and opinion makers were drawn into program. They included the likes of Walter Winchell, Walter Lippman, Drew Pearson and Ben Bradlee.
It is highly unlikely any would admit to being a mouthpiece for the CIA, yet they did what they believed was their duty for their country. Many were true believers, but they still needed guidance. The were very effective in spreading official tale of Lee Oswald as the lone assassin... then later, in building acceptance for the conclusions of the Warren Commission. They followed this up by having the press do there best to make Jim Garrison look like another lone nut.
